Wes Montgomery at 100 (IS)

About

Portrait of Wes, Ásgeir Ásgeirsson´s quartet.

Guitarist Ásgeir Ásgeirsson will pay tribute to Wes Montgomery on the occasion of Wes’ 100th birthday this year.

Montgomery’s career was short but varied, the early part of Wes Montgomery’s career was characterized by the traditional trio and quartet recordings (1959-1963) which are often referred to as the Riverside years, but after that label folded, Wes released albums under the Verve label (1964-1968). At Verve, he recorded with larger bands songs from other directions more often than not popular songs of the time.

Ásgeir’s quartet is going to play the cream of their favorite songs from the 9-year recording career of Wes, who died in 1968. Guitarist Ásgeir Ásgeirsson has been one of the nation’s most prominent jazz guitarists for the past 20 years and has played with all of Iceland’s leading jazz musicians as well as quite a few well-known foreign names such as Chris Cheek, Seamus Blake, Ingrid Jensen, Dave Weckl, Matt Penman, Andrew Cunningham and Guthrie Govan.
