Every year, we honor senior colleagues for their contribution to the jazz scene in Iceland. This year, it’s Þórir Valgeir Baldurson, a recording engineer, arranger, composer, and keyboardist. Primarily known as a master of the Hammond organ, Þórir turned 80 earlier this year. He was born and raised in Keflavík, studied at the Reykjavík Music School, graduating from the music education department in 1965. From 1965 to 1967, he taught music at Laugalækjarskóli and later taught for many years at the Iceland Academy of the Arts’ Music School. Þórir formed his first band at the age of 12 in Keflavík and has played with numerous bands, including being an original member of the Savanna Trio. He worked abroad for many years, residing in Sweden, Germany, and the United States. As a recording engineer and arranger, he has collaborated with artists such as Elton John, ABBA, Donna Summer, and Grace Jones. Þórir Baldursson received the STEF Honorary Award in 2020. Many musicians will perform at the concert, and Þórir will also give a brief speech.
