Tónleikar og masterclass Wadada Leo Smith
Wadada Leo Smith einn fremsti jazztrompetleikari samtímans heimsækir landið í nóvember.
Á laugardeginum 17. nóvember verður hann með masterclass kennslu fyrir nemendur Listaháskólans og tónlistarskóla FÍH í húsnæði FÍH í Rauðagerði. Þar mun hann m.a. ræða um tónlist sína, um tónsmíðar og spuna, hlutverk og stöðu tónlistarmannsins í nútímanum. Hefst námskeiðið kl 12:00 á laugardeginum.
Hann verður með tónleika í Kaldalóni í Hörpu sunnudagskvöldið 18. nóvember kl 20, ásamt Skúla Sverrissyni á bassa, og Matthíasi M D Hemstock og Magnúsi Trygvasyni Eliassen á trommur.
Wadada Leo Smith er einn fremsti jazztrompetleikari samtímans en hefur einnig getið sér gott orð sem tónskáld og hlotið fjölda viðurkenninga á yfir fimmtíu ára ferli. Síðastliðið vor kom út 4 diska kassi, Ten Freedom Summers, sem inniheldur 19 verk eftir hann sem öll tengjast frelsisbaráttu svartra í Bandaríkjunum. Í þeim er blandað saman jazztónlist og nútímatónlist á einstakan hátt að mati gagnrýnenda sem hafa lofað útgáfuna og lýst henni sem miklu afreki og hátindi á glæsilegum ferli Smiths sem fagnaði 70 ára afmæli sínu síðastliðinn vetur.
Wadada Leo Smith hefur heimsótt Ísland margsinnis og haft góð tengsl við landið. Fyrst kom hann til tónleikahalds fyrir 30 árum á vegum Jazzvakningar. Fjölmargir Íslendingar hafa unnið með Smith, m.a. Þorsteinn Magnússon, Hilmar Jensson, Matthías Hemstock, Pétur Grétarsson, Einar Már Guðmundsson og Skúli Sverrisson, sem hefur leikið á rafbassa í sveit Smiths, Organic, á síðustu árum. Útgáfufyrirtækið Gramm gaf út plötuna Human Rights í samstarfi við Smith á 9. áratugnum.
Wadada Leo Smith hefur samið tónlist fyrir fjölmarga flytjendur, en verk eftir hann hafa verið flutt af ýmsum hópum, m.a. stórsveit AACM, Kronos-kvartettinum, New Century Players, San Francisco Contemporary Music Players, Contemporary Chamber Players (University of Chicago), S.E.M. Ensemble og California E.A.R. Unit.
Smith hefur rannsakað evrópskar, afrískar, asískar og amerískar tónlistarhefðir og hefur þróað eigin kenningu um jazz og heimstónlist og nótnakerfið “Ankhrasmation” til að flytja tónlist sína. Nú gegnir hann prófessorstöðu við California Institute of the Arts, og stýrir MFA prógrammi í afrísk-amerískri spunatónlist.
Wadada Leo Smith hefur gefið út yfir 40 plötur undir eigin nafni með frumsaminni tónlist. Heimsókn Wadada Leo Smith er gerð möguleg með samvinnu Jazzhátíðar Reykjavíkur og Sendiráðs Bandaríkjanna í Reykjavík og aðstoð FÍH.

Wadada Leo Smith is one of most fascinating players in American avant-garde jazz. He has recieved many accolades as well for his compositions in a career spanning over fifty years. His most recent 4-disc epic, Ten Freedom Summers, is the work of a lifetime by one of jazz’s true visionaries, a kaleidoscopic, spiritually charged collection of 19 compositions inspired by the struggle for African-American freedom. Reviewers and critics believe this work to be the artistic peak and pinnacle in an impressive career.
As an Improvisor-Composer, Smith has studied a variety of music cultures (African, Japanese, Indonesian, European and American) and has developed a Jazz and world music theory, and a notation system to fully express this music which he calls “Ankhrasmation”. He has taught at the University of New Haven 1975-’76, the Creative Music Studio in Woodstock, NY. 1975-’78, and Bard College 1987-’93. He is currently a professor of Music at the California Institute of the Arts, and is the director of the MFA program in African American Improvisation.
Smith has composed music for solo, ensemble, classical and creative orchestra and stage works. His compositions has been performed by other contemporary music ensembles: AACM Orchestra, Kronos Quartet, Da Capo Chamber Player, New Century Players, San Francisco Contemporary Music Players, Contemporary Chamber Players (University of Chicago), S.E.M. Ensemble and California E.A.R. Unit.
Wadada Leo Smith has published over 40 recordings under his own name.
