Ingibjörg Turchi

About

Ingibjörg Elsa Turchi has been a mainstay of the Iceland music scene for the recent years, performing with many of the nation’s most beloved musicians in all genres. Alongside her session work, Ingibjörg also performs regularly under her own name, where she explores the possibilities of the electric bass, her main instrument. Ingibjörg released the EP Wood/Work in 2017 where her bass playing took center stage. In the summer of 2020 she will follow up with her first full length album, Meliae, where Ingibjörg continues to expand her sound with the help of her band. The album deftly combines jazz, minimalism and experimentalism in a highly melodic blend. Repetitions abound. The saxophone, guitar and bass are deconstructed with the help of modern electronics and then rebuilt to tremendous effect. In this way Ingibjörg and company create a unique and hypnotic musical landscape in which the familiar can be appreciated anew.

PERFORMERS:

Tumi Árnason: tenor Saxophone
Magnús Trygvason Eliassen: drums
Hróðmar Sigurðsson: guitar
Magnús Jóhann Ragnarsson: piano and rhodes

Reviews:
“The music itself is terrific . . . minimalistic bass playing coalescing into rhythmic motifs and loops. The sound is processed and notes and scales are cleverly woven together . . . very listenable piece of music”
Arnar Eggert Thoroddssen on “Wood/Work”

“Ingibjörg Turchi’s virtuosic ensemble played a set of warm, charming instrumental music that hovered between jazz, post-rock, formal composition and improvisation. It was free-flowing and hypnotic, from Ingibjörg’s finger-picked bass melodies, to Magnús Trygvason Eliassen´s startling and creative approach to percussion… to Tumi Árnason’s sparing and sometimes soaring saxophone passages.”
John Rogers, The Reykjavík Grapevine

“I did manage to move my way up to the front finally to watch Ingibjörg Turchi and her band create luscious, hypnotizing soundscapes defying the boundaries of genre and raising the bar on musicianship.”
Rex Beckett, The Reykjavik Grapevine
