Lineup: Ralph Towner – guitar
One of the guitar’s most unique figures, Ralph Towner, will perform a solo concert at Tjarnarbio on September 7th. Towner started out as a classical pianist but turned to the guitar after buying a classical guitar on a whim. Towner is a musician who, weather performing standards or originals, captures the gorgeous nuance and magic that a nylon string classical guitar can emote.
Towner formed the ground breaking group Oregon which wove anything from Indian raga to jazz improvisational techniques and world music into a musical tapestry that inspired many musicians to follow in their footsteps. Towner has collaborated with notable musicians such as Gary Burton, John Abercrombie, Egberto Gismonti, Larry Coryell, Keith Jarrett, Jan Garbarek og Gary Peacock and was a guest artist with Weather Report on the album “I Sing the Body Electric”
“Inspired is perhaps the most meaningful word to describe Towner’s guitar work. It floats in the mist somewhere between classical and jazz, in a nether land that Towner has singlehandedly staked out as his own personal territory; a musical mode of rare beauty and singular expression.”–Ralph Miriello, Jazztimes, USA
